There are seven important changes in the new regulations as follows.

I. Applicants must be pursuing their education at a registered school or risk deportation. The current regulations require applicants to prove only that they wish to study in Canada.

Second, student permits will only be issued to successful applicants from educational institutions designated as eligible to receive international students. The current regulations are that any educational institution is eligible.

A study visa automatically authorizes the holder to work for up to 20 hours per week outside of the pre-course hours without the need to apply for a separate work permit, and the holder of the study visa must have been studying at the designated educational institution for more than six months for the purpose of obtaining a degree, diploma or certificate.

Fourth, a Co-Op Work Permit is only issued to high school students who are enrolled in a designated educational institution, and the internship is part of their studies.

V. Visitors may also apply for a study visa within Canada.

VI. A student visa automatically expires 90 days after the completion of studies unless a valid work visa or other authorization to remain in Canada is available.

7. Eligible international students may work full-time after graduation while waiting for a Post-Graduation Work Permit.
